24: The Camera Moves

You've created your film treatment, now the second step: plan the camera moves. You're working with a four-to-five minute film length - if your concept goes longer, that's fine. But for this challenge, only lay out the camera moves for that four-to-five minute range.


You have two options: storyboard, or write shotlists. Storyboards are sketches, as close to scale as possible, that show the scene. Use arrows and a sentence to indicate the kind of shot and any camera moves. Draw a new scene every time the camera moves, so one drawing per shot. And shots should generally stay under 8-10 seconds; often, for pacing, they're around 5 seconds.

The second approach is to create a shotlist. Take a look at this link for a very easy-to-follow example.


Remember, storyboards and shotlists don't have to be pretty or well-drawn, they just have to get the job done of communicating your vision of how the camera moves to your team.


Again, it's a two-day challenge. Take your time, think with the "camera in your head," imagine yourself on set moving your camera through each scene.
